Educational Needs

Prostate cancer

  • Salvage prostatectomy-- There is a need for clear criteria to determine which patients are most likely to benefit from this procedure and achieve favorable outcomes. Additionally, the optimal timing of Salvage Radical Prostatectomy following failed primary treatment remains uncertain, requiring further research to establish appropriate protocols.
  • Exercise in prostate cancer will be covered in a didactic format.  content will focus on recent large scale clinical trials on exercise in men with prostate cancer.
  • High risk prostate cancer non-conventional imaging—will be a multidisciplinary debate between radiation and surgery.  urologists need to be aware of which patient factors influence one form of treatment over the other.

BPH

  • BPH and prostate cancer—urologists need to understand how screening, surveillance and treatment should be executed for men with prostate cancer and BPH.
  • BPH PANEL:.  Aquablation vs. HOLEP for large glands—urologists need to know which patients are better treated with HOLEP vs. Aquablation in the setting of large prostate.

Functional Urology

  • GU fistula after cancer therapy:  didactic lecture.  Urologist need to know the timing of intervention, the choice of surgical repair, and postoperative care for managing post-cancer therapy GU fistulas.
  • Radiated GU fistula:  experts in urology will outline what steps are needed to surgically repair radiated GU fistulas.
  • AUA guidelines on NLUTD:  didactic.  An expert in urology will identify the important management points from the recent NLUTD guidelines that urologist need to know to care for these patients.
  • Male SUI panel discussion: a panel of experts will discuss risks, benefits, and patient selection for different types of treatments for male SUI.  Urologists need to know these options well to provide the best care for these patients.
  • Role of autografts for SCP in 2023:  didactic.  Urologists need to know which patients are best suited for SCP with autograft in the current era of mesh and other grafts.
  • Transgender surgery:  urologists need to understand what components and personnel are necessary to start a transgender surgery program.

Artificial Intelligence

  • Further research and collaboration between AI experts and urologists are needed to bridge this practice gap, develop user-friendly AI solutions, and demonstrate the real-world impact of AI in improving urological care.

Dilemmas in GME

  • Program directors, faculty, and chairs need to know how to manage current day residency training dilemmas and crises when they occur to prevent damage to residents and training programs.

Cancer

  • Small renal mass management—urologists need to understand the current status of small renal mass management, including surveillance, treatment, and patient selection.
  • Inguinal lymph nodes in high risk penile cancer—urologists need to understand the current guidelines and new techniques and protocols for managing inguinal lymph nodes in men with penile cancer.
  • Trimodality therapy for MIBC:  urologists need to know components of trimodal therapy as well as patient selection and outcomes of trimodal therapy for MIBC.
  • Female health in bladder cancer management: Urologists need guidance on the impact of bladder cancer treatments on female reproductive health, sexual function, and quality of life.
  • Robotic armed fluoroscopy and the management of urologic cancer patients:  urologists need to understand the clinical outcomes, cost-effectiveness, and long-term benefits of incorporating robotic- armed fluoroscopy into hybrid operating rooms in the management of urologic cancers.

Mens Health

  • Management of complications related to Xiaflex injection and PD surgery:  urologists need to know how to manage the most common complications related to xiaflex injection and how to avoid complications with PD correcting surgery after xiaflex injection.
  • 50 yr history of prosthetic urology:  urologists need to network with surgeons who have amassed significant experience in performing prosthetic surgery in urology.
  • Testosterone therapy in radical prostatectomy patients:  urologist need to better understand the potential risks and benefits of testosterone therapy in this specific population and to establish evidence-based recommendations for testosterone use in prostate cancer patients.
  • Future of vasectomy:  urologists need to understand the changes occurring in pregnancy prevention as it pertains to the male patient as well as new paradigms and options available in preventing pregnancy.

Endourology

  • Practical AI in urology:  urologists need to know about ways AI can improve patient management, electronic medical records, and outcomes.
  • Renal Papilla:  urologists need to know the pathophysiology of renal stone formation according to basic science studies.
  • Innovations in flexible ureteroscopy:  urologists need to know about the newest technology and equipment for performing ureteroscopy in an unbiased fashion, including cost and comparison studies between different equipment.
  • MiniPCNL—Urologists need to know how to incorporate miniPCNL techniques into their practice including the type of specialized equipment available to get the best outcomes.
  • Intrarenal pressures—urologists need to understand how intrarenal pressures affect renal function after retrograde intrarenal surgery.

Stricture management

  • Town hall.  Experts in the field with vast experience will discuss how to manage urethral stricture disease including when to refer to specialized care.

Case Studies inTtrauma

  • Case studies presented to outline current trauma guidelines including when to refer and when to intervene.

 Academic Urology Forum

  • Urologists need to know the value of getting involved in hospital leadership and how to negotiate with hospital leadership.  Senior urologists need to know their value in training urology residents.  Faculty, program directors and chairs need to know what political and legal challenges are arising in urology that can negatively impact their training programs.

The Urology Workforce

  • Urologists need to know what the past, present, and future data shows about the urology workforce and possible solutions to improve the output of well-trained urology residents in the US.

Microaggessions, Wellness, Coaching

  • Urologists need to learn about personal coaching opportunities available to the them from a fellow urologist and certified life coach. Urologists need to understand how to limit small acts that can negatively affect others.

Future of Robotics in Pediatric Urology

  • Urologists need to know possible applications of multiport and single port robotic surgery systems in pediatric patients.

Resident quiz bowl and T Leon Howard

  • Quiz bowl rapid fire format with moderator and teams of resident participants.  T Leon Howard is an audience participation case-based discussion of rare and unique urologic complaints.

Health Policy Forum

  • Urologists need to learn about common and current health policy issues that affect their practice.

Practice of Urology

  • Urologists need to learn about resources that can help them provide excellent clinical care as well as a successful business.  Urologists need to know strategies to grow their service line at their hospital.  Urologists need to learn about the risks and benefits of alternative employment models such as private equity groups and locum tenens.

Billing and Coding

  • Urologists need to know the most current guidelines for billing and coding.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the 102nd Annual Meeting of the South Central Section of the AUA, attendees will be able to:

  • Discuss recent developments in medical and surgical management of urology patients.
  • Describe new technologies for diagnosis and treatment of urologic conditions.
  • Incorporate current guidelines in the urologic practice.
  • Discuss current health policy issues impacting urology.
  • Discuss factors contributing to burnout in urologists and strategies for managing burnout.
  • Outline recent coding and billing in urology.
